Montgomery County SORU in Gaithersburg
Gaithersburg is home to the Montgomery County Sex Offender Registry Unit, known as SORU. This office is the county's designated registration location for all sex offenders living, working, or attending school in Montgomery County. SORU is at 100 Edison Park Drive, Gaithersburg, MD 20878. This is the same address as the Montgomery County Police 1D Rockville District Station. The main district station line is 240-773-6070, available from 6 a.m. to midnight.
SORU has limited walk-in hours for sex offender registration. In-person registration is accepted on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 10 a.m. and on Wednesdays from 3 to 5 p.m. If you need to contact the unit by email, reach them at SORU@montgomerycountymd.gov. Do not try to walk in outside posted hours as the unit will not be available to process registration.
Gaithersburg has its own city police department for general law enforcement purposes, but sex offender registration goes through the county SORU, not the city police. This is an important distinction. Offenders registering for the first time or updating their information must go to SORU at 100 Edison Park Drive, not to Gaithersburg City Police.
New registrants must appear within three days of arriving in the county. This applies to people released from a correctional facility, moving from another state, or moving within the county. Under CP § 11-704, any change to address, vehicle, phone, online identifiers, or place of work must be reported to SORU within three days. The same three-day window applies to anyone leaving the county or state.
Montgomery County Police Department oversees the SORU unit. Their main page is at montgomerycountymd.gov/police. This site has district station contacts and general information about county law enforcement programs.
